Professional: Coming of Age: The Center for Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology
After I finally finished my research at RIT and consulting work in 2017, I took on the challenge of writing what I thought would be a short web entry on how the Center for Imaging Science came to be and a little about its history. That short web entry occupied two years and turned into a book published by RIT press. The book was released in October 2019 at a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Imaging Science building and of RIT’s first Ph.D. degree (in Imaging Science). This video link or below is to the talk I gave on that occasion about the early days of the Center.
In 2025 the Center celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding. I thought it was time to tell the unlikely story behind how the Center came into being. This link will open a short video that tells the story of the co-conspirators who pulled it off.
The Center for Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology celebrated the 30th anniversary of RIT's first Ph.D. program and the opening of the Center on October 19, 2019. This video includes RIT president emiratas Albert Simone’s remarks, Dr. David Messenger’s introduction and my story about the earliest days at the Center. It is about 35 minutes long and covers what I found RIT when I started in 1980 and the program from 1980-1989. The book covers the whole evolution of the Center up to 2019 with an emphasis on the first two decades.
